About

The veterinarian behind the name

Dr. Christie has spent 21 years as a licensed Illinois veterinarian. Those years taught her what families actually need in their hardest moment. Privacy. Time. Someone who follows their lead. She built The Kind Vet around exactly those things, one unhurried appointment at a time.

She named the practice for the standard she holds herself to, from a quote she has carried her entire career: “Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.” — Henry James. That standard, kindness with no exceptions, is what comes through your door.

Dr. Christie treats every pet the way she would want her own treated. It has been her rule since her first day in practice, and it does not change for your pet's last day.

How it works

What happens during an in-home pet euthanasia appointment

Nothing happens until you're ready, and nothing happens fast.

1

Quiet arrival.

She explains everything that will be happening and answers any questions you have.

2

Deep sleep.

Once you're ready, your pet receives a sedative and drifts off right where they are: their cozy bed, your lap, or under their favorite tree. Your pet will simply fall asleep, comfortable and unafraid.

3

Saying goodbye.

Quiet and completely painless. You choose who's in the room and where you are for it. Hold them, step out, or sit close with your eyes closed. Every one of those is love.

4

Respectful aftercare.

If your pet is coming with her, they leave covered and tucked in like they're sleeping. Smaller pets rest in a soft, blanket-lined basket; larger pets are placed on a stretcher, covered and tucked in with a blanket.

Aftercare

After the goodbye

Urn

Private cremation.

Dr. Christie coordinates everything through Faithful Companion, the crematory she trusts. Typically, cremations happen the same evening, and your pet's ashes are hand delivered the next day.

Dove

Angel Care.

If your pet passes at home on their own, Dr. Christie is here to help with everything that comes next: guidance in the moment, keepsakes, and coordinating cremation or whichever aftercare you choose.

Urn with paw print

Home burial.

If there's a special resting spot at home, Dr. Christie will walk you through what your county allows and help answer any questions.

When is it time

How do you know it's time?

If you're asking the question, you're probably afraid of both answers: too soon, and too late. Almost every family who reaches out is standing in that same place.

Dr. Christie's incredible support team is here to help answer your questions, listen to your concerns, and help you think through your pet's quality of life: their good days and bad days, their appetite, their joy, and what they're telling you in their own way.

There is no pressure toward an appointment, ever. Some families reach out weeks before they're ready. That's welcome here.

And when the time does come, Dr. Christie will help you see it the way she does: a gift to give them after all they've given you.

FAQ

Questions families ask

How do I know when it's time to euthanize my dog or cat?
There is rarely one clear moment, and waiting for one can keep you stuck. Most veterinarians suggest weighing your pet's quality of life: whether the bad days outnumber the good ones, whether they still eat, move, and enjoy the things they love. Dr. Christie likes to remind families that as difficult as it is, it is so much better to say goodbye before your pet is really struggling or suffering.
What actually happens during an in-home pet euthanasia appointment?
During an in-home pet euthanasia appointment, Dr. Christie explains every step before anything begins. Your pet first receives a sedative and drifts into a deep, comfortable sleep in their favorite spot, feeling no fear or pain. Once they're fully asleep, she gives the final medication, which is painless and peaceful. You set the pace throughout, and nothing happens until you're ready.
Do I have to stay in the room?
No, staying in the room is always your choice. Some people hold their pet until the very end. Some say goodbye while their pet is deeply asleep and step out. Some stay close but look away. Dr. Christie follows your lead without judgment. Your pet is comforted and loved the entire time, no matter what you choose.
How and when do we get the ashes back?
If you choose private cremation, your pet's ashes are hand delivered to your home the next day, at no extra charge. Dr. Christie coordinates the entire process through our cremation partner, Faithful Companion, so you never have to make calls or pick anything up.
What areas do you serve?
Dr. Christie brings in-home pet euthanasia to homes across Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, including Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, and Des Plaines. If you're not sure whether we travel to you, just ask.
How much does in-home pet euthanasia cost?
The cost of in-home pet euthanasia depends on where you live and the aftercare you choose. The Kind Vet In-Home Euthanasia publishes pricing openly so you can plan without a phone call. See the full pricing page, or feel free to get in touch with us directly for more information.
